USCIS Case Status

Your United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) case status can be checked online. When should you check it? And when should you be concerned about the processing time for your application? We’ll explain how to check the status and what you can expect for processing times.

Checking Your USCIS Case Status Online

If you filed an application or petition with the USCIS (formerly Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)), you can check the status online. Before you check the status, it helps to know the factors that can affect it.

Eligibility

  • Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens
  • Workers with exceptional skill or ability

Preferences

  • Family-sponsored applications – Preference is given to an immediate family member of a U.S. citizen who is a spouse, a parent, or a child under age 21. There are second, third, and fourth preferences for other family members.
  • Employer-sponsored applications – Workers with exceptional abilities, as well as certain professors, researchers, executives, and managers are given priority. There are additional tiers of skill level and preference.

Yearly limits

There are yearly limits for the number of U.S. immigrant visas issued.

Processing time

Generally, a USCIS case's processing time takes five to ten months. It can take longer to receive a visa, depending on the preference for your application type (family- or employer-sponsored). You can check USCIS processing time online, establish an account, and sign up for case updates.
